Concert I: Trout Quintet, the first in a series of performances featuring the music of composers Franz Shubert and Mary Pappert School of Music Professor Emeritus David Stock, will begin the three-year Schubert on the Bluff concert series on campus.

The concert, which will be held on Sunday, Aug. 30, at 3 p.m. in the PNC Recital Hall, will feature Schubert’s Die Forelle (The Trout) and Der Hirt auf dem Felsen (The Shepherd on the Rock), along with Stock’s Two for the Road.

The pairing of Schubert’s music with Stock’s will illustrate how their styles are very different, yet alike—creating an intriguing listening experience for the audience, according to David Allen Wehr, artistic director of the Schubert on the Bluff series and Jack W. Geltz Distinguished Piano Chair.

“I have programmed the music of Schubert and Stock not only because of the vivid contrast in their work’s texture and character, but because I feel that the composers are linked by their emphasis on the melodic line,” Wehr said. “The Trout Quintet is one of the most popular pieces of classical music ever written, with its famous melodies and unusual instrumental colors. And unlike much recently composed music, David Stock’s compositions always have a feeling of clarity and melodic appeal.”

Concert I will feature Wehr performing with music school faculty and members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO), including:

  • Benjamin Binder, associate professor of musicianship
  • Marylène Gingras-Roy, adjunct professor of viola and member of the PSO
  • Sari Gruber, adjunct professor of voice
  • David Premo, associate principal cello for the PSO
  • Ron Samuels, adjunct professor of clarinet and member of the PSO
  • Charles Stegeman, professor of violin and concertmaster for the Pittsburgh Opera and Ballet Orchestras
  • Rachel Stegeman, adjunct professor of violin and concertmaster for the Wheeling and Youngstown Orchestras
  • Jeffrey Turner, director of orchestral studies, adjunct professor of double bass and principal bass for the PSO.

Concertgoers are invited to a pre-concert discussion featuring Wehr and Stock, which will begin at 2:30 p.m.

Seating is reserved for all performances in the Schubert on the Bluff series. Admission is $10; audiences are encouraged to purchase tickets early either online, by email or by calling 412.232.3853. For more information, call 412.396.6083 or visit www.duq.edu/Schubert.
