Educational leaders from the U.S. and Canada will convene in the Power Center Ballroom for the sixth annual Duquesne Educational Leadership Symposium (DELS) from Tuesday, May 21, through Thursday, May 23.
The three-day symposium, which is hosted by the University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA) Center for Educational Leadership and Social Justice, will focus on the theme Action, Advocacy and Research: Challenging Educational Inequities with Students, Schools and Communities.
Featured events will include presentations by educators and renowned experts, including:
- Dr. Olga Welch, dean of the School of Education
- Dr. Eric Eshbach, superintendent of the Northern York County School District
- Dr. Gretchen Givens Generett, associate dean of the School of Education
- Dr. Rick McCown, director of the Professional Doctorate in Educational Leadership program
- Dr. Jill Perry, research faculty for the Department of Educational Foundations and Leadership
- Dr. Lina Dostilio, director for academic community engagement
- Pastor Tim Smith, executive director of the Center of Life.
A panel discussion, moderated by Dr. Lina Dostilio, will address issues and solutions based from three perspectives—from the schools, from the academy and from the community. Panelists will include:
- Dr. Fran Serenka, director of pupil services and special education fir Montour Area schools
- Melissa Wagner, principal at Minadeo Elementary School of Pittsburgh Public Schools
- Dr. Rodney Hopson, professor of education for the Department of Educational Foundations and Leadership
- Pastor Tim Smith.
The UCEA Center for Educational Leadership and Social Justice—one of only eight UCEA centers in the world—seeks to investigate the relationship between educational leadership and social justice, particularly how educational leaders can be better-prepared and equipped to work with marginalized, under-represented and underserved students.
