The School of Law will host its annual Commencement ceremony on Sunday, June 2, at 11 a.m. in the A.J. Palumbo Center. A special Mass will precede the event at 9 a.m. in the University chapel.
Phoebe A. Haddon
Members of the Student Bar Association (SBA) at the School of Law selected Phoebe A. Haddon, dean and professor of law at the Francis King Carey School of Law at the University of Maryland, as this year’s Commencement speaker.
“We are thrilled that Dean Haddon—the SBA’s first choice—accepted our invitation and will be returning to her alma mater to make this June’s graduation ceremony particularly memorable,” said Law School Dean Ken Gormley.
Haddon, a 1977 graduate of the School of Law who served as editor in chief of the Duquesne Law Review, is a national leader in legal education and is an expert in jury participation, the courts and diversity. A fourth-generation lawyer, she is an accomplished scholar on constitutional law and tort law, and is the co-author of two casebooks on those topics. In addition, Haddon has published articles on equal protection, jury participation, academic freedom and diversity.
Under Haddon’s leadership, the Francis King Carey School of Law has risen six spots in national rankings. Prior to joining the University of Maryland, Haddon taught at the Temple University Beasley School of Law. She is a board member of The Constitution Project as well as the Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women, and in 2011 received the Great Teacher Award from the Society of American Law Teachers.
