Dr. Terrel Rhodes, Vice President of the Association of American Colleges & Universities (AACU), will be the featured speaker at an upcoming Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) workshop designed to help educators from across the University deepen student learning.

Dr. Terrel Rhodes
This interactive workshop, Better Together: Highly Effective Practices for Engaged Learning, will be held on Friday, Sept. 16, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in Room 613 of the Union. Open to Duquesne faculty, teaching assistants and staff, as well as faculty from regional colleges, the workshop encourages participants to consider the learning outcomes of their own courses and co-curricular programs, and incorporate common features of high impact learning.
Rhodes, who is a vice president for the office of quality, curriculum and assessment also is executive director of the AACU’s Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education (VALUE) project. Rhodes will also meet with Duquesne deans and department chairs earlier in the day to address integrative learning and student learning assessment.
The event is part of the CTE multi-year initiative, Small Changes Advancing Learning (SCALE), featuring strategies that are known to benefit students equitably and are achievable by instructors in varied contexts.
“We hope that the participants will look at key elements of high impact practices, and explore why students who experience multiple high impact practices learn more deeply,” said Dr. Alexandra Gregory, associate provost for academic affairs.
High impact practices include teaching and learning techniques that educational research suggests increase rates of student retention and student engagement among students from varied backgrounds. These practices enhance student learning and work to narrow gaps in achievement across student populations.
Registration is available online. For more information, contact the CTE at 412.396.5177 or email cte@duq.edu.
