An award-winning film co-directed and co-produced by a Duquesne University faculty member that chronicles the story of an Indian-Portuguese couple, who emigrated from Mozambique (a former colony of Portugal) to Lisbon, Portugal, in the 1970s will be featured at an upcoming campus screening.
Associate Psychology Professor Dr. Suzanne Barnard’s film Maxamba—which shows the couple’s daily life, including the impending loss of their home, livelihood as tailors and community—will be shown on Friday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m., in the Charles J. Dougherty Ballroom of the Power Center.
The film creates a living archive of the history and memory of the inhabitants of the Quinta da Vitória neighborhood during its demolition. Despite the social injustices perpetuated through the neighborhood’s demolition, Barnard thought it was essential to show the positive aspects of the community. “It was equally important to show the real beauty, cultural richness, and significantly self-sustaining nature of everyday life, work, and relationships in such a community,” she said.
Maxamba was awarded Best Film, Brand New Section, from the IndieLisboa International Film Festival.
