The campus community is invited to celebrate and acknowledge the many contributions of U.S. librarians and libraries—including Duquesne’s own Gumberg Library—during the annual National Library Week. Established in 1958 by the American Library Association with the theme Wake Up and Read, National Library Week is held each April to promote the use and support of all libraries—school, public, academic and special.
“National Library Week is a week of reflection and celebration of libraries and their role in the community,” said Christie Kliewer, outreach and communications librarian. “We’re taking the opportunity at Gumberg to showcase the work we do every day, the new ideas we are growing and some of the lesser known resources that we provide. Overall I’m looking forward to sharing a fun week with our community.”
Gumberg, which is marking National Library Week through Saturday, April 14, is hosting a handful of programs to bring attention to fresh resources, such as new items in the library as part of the “Gumberg Library of Things,” including a Nintendo Switch.
Other events scheduled in conjunction with National Library Week include:
Thursday, April 12
Pet Therapy, 1 to 2 p.m., Popular Reading Area, 4th Floor, Gumberg Library
Maya the Newfoundland will visit for some pets and kisses! Come by and take a break with a trained therapy dog.
Ritual Art Today Exhibit Speaker, 4 to 5:30 p.m., Popular Reading Area, 4th Floor, Gumberg Library
Ritual Art Today: Contemporary and Non-Traditional Religious Objects is an exhibit currently on display at Gumberg Library that brings together Jewish artists and showcases how art and ritual come together. Curator Ben Schachter will discuss his book Image, Action, and Idea in Contemporary Jewish Art and the exhibit. In addition, copies of Schachter’s book will be available for $30 at the event.
Friday, April 13
Library of Things Open House, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., 4th Floor, Gumberg Library
The Library is more than a place to check out books, articles and traditional resources. Gumberg now has a collection of useful and fun resources available to borrow. Want to learn how to use knitting/crocheting needles? Ready for a round of Mario Kart on the Nintendo Switch? Want to learn how to use the 3D printer or a raspberry pi? Stop by the library on the hour and half hour between on Friday and try out the new Library of Things.
