Pittsburgh Guitar Legend Joe Negri Will be Honored at Special Event
Musicians and singers of all ages may choose from an assortment of camps and special events to hone their craft thanks to the City Music Center’s (CMC) 2018 Summer Music Series.
Providing music education and enjoyment for youth, adults and the community since 1989, the CMC is offering five public weeklong camps that include everything from jazz and music technology to voice. In addition, a daylong guitar and bass workshop will honor Pittsburgh guitar legend Joe Negri, adjunct professor from the Mary Pappert School of Music.
The Summer Jazz Experience will be held from Monday, June 25, through Friday, June 29, for ages 14 and up. Instrumentalists will learn to play jazz and make music with others in both big-band and small-ensemble settings.
Students entering eighth grade and up, as well as adults, may attend the Music Technology Summer Intensive camp from Monday, July 9, through Friday, July 13. Participants will learn the principles of audio engineering, mixing and mastering, electronic music composition and multimedia production. Five-time Grammy award-winning engineer Jay Dudt also will conduct a recording master class during the camp.
The PSO Brass Intensive will be offered from Monday, July 16, through Friday, July 20, to students entering grades eight through 12 who have their own instrument. Featuring members of the Grammy award-winning Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, this camp will provide participants with guided warmups and exercises, studio classes specific to each instrument, small ensembles and chamber groups, master classes and guest artists. The camp concludes with a final performance featuring the participants.
Singers ages seven to 17 may attend the Vocal Intensive camp from Monday, July 16, through Friday, July 20. No prior singing experience is necessary. Participants will work on solo and ensemble singing, developing healthy vocal technique, creating a character, staging and movement, and storytelling through song.
Students entering eighth grade and up, as well as adults, may attend Guitar Day with Joe Negri on Saturday, July 21. This daylong guitar and bass workshop includes a master class with Negri that will cover technical master, stylistic coaching, improvisation, live performance and more. Various guitar faculty from the music school are among the camp’s instructors.
Three sessions of the Violin and Viola Boot Camp with Charles and Rachel Stegeman will be offered on the following dates:
- Monday, July 30, through Friday, Aug. 3
- Monday, Aug. 6, through Friday, Aug. 10
- Monday, Aug. 13, through Friday, Aug. 17.
Open to all ages, this camp is designed for violinists and violists of all ages looking to improve in practicing efficiency equivalent to an entire school year. Group technique classes, master classes and supervised practicing are included.
