Join Latinx and Hispanic Heritage Month Events

Latinx and Hispanic Heritage Month is underway at Duquesne with a series of events that highlight the culture, history and contributions of more than 20 Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America.

Presented by the Center for Excellence in Diversity and Student Inclusion, the events offer employees and students the opportunity to experience the culture through dance, food, music, poetry and virtual education sessions.

Thursday, Sept. 23
Poet Fernando Valverde
4:30 p.m.- 5:30 p.m., Lecture Hall 3, Rockwell Hall
Join Fernando Valverde, award-winning Spanish-language poet, as he shares his poetry and discusses his experience as an immigrant growing up in the United States.

Monday, Sept. 27
What is Latinx? & Who is Latinx? A Critical Conversation with Dr. Cristobal Salinas
3 p.m. via Zoom Lecture
Dr. Cristobal Salinas Jr. is an assistant professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Research Methodology at Florida Atlantic University whose research explores the social and political context of education opportunities for historically marginalized communities. The event is co-sponsored by the School of Education.

This is sponsored by the Center for Engaged Teaching and Research as its October CETR Journal Club event. Dr. Liliana Castrellón is an assistant professor and director of the School of Education’s UCEA Center for Educational Leadership and Social Justice.

The Latinx Connect Conference: Elevating Identities and Contemporary Issues
Held via Zoom, the online conference is hosted by the University of Pittsburgh’s Office for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. Its goal is to offer a space for students, educators, community leaders and political advocates to talk about Latinx identities, cultures and contemporary issues.
