The newly refurbished Crucifix, one of the most recognized religious symbols on campus, will be installed on Thursday, March 6, (weather permitting) at its new location in the grassy area between the Rockwell Hall skywalk and the upper entrance to the School of Health Sciences.

The statue portion of the Crucifix was removed in November to undergo a much-needed, major restoration.

A large crane will be utilized during the daylong project, which will include assembling the new wooden cross, attaching the refinished statue to it and installing the Crucifix into its new base. The original cross that remains at the previous location on the walkway between the Administration Building and the School of Health Sciences will be removed as well.

Later this spring, lights will be installed to illuminate the renovated Crucifix.

Created by artist and sculptor Jos Pirkner in 1959 at his studio in Bilthoven, Holland, the original Crucifix was donated by the University Women’s Guild of Duquesne University and dedicated in 1960.
