The University’s tradition of helping to make the greater Hill District and South Side neighborhoods clean and green will continue at the 26th Annual Spring Clean-Up on Saturday, April 18.
The event, sponsored by Spiritan Campus Ministry in the Division of Mission and Identity, involves hundreds of Duquesne faculty, staff and student volunteers who pick up litter as well as plant and weed in these neighborhoods.
“Spring Clean-Up is a fantastic, fun event that allows the campus community to give back to their neighbors,” said Campus Minister Kate Lecci, who helped to organize the event. “More importantly, there are community members out cleaning and greening right along with everyone from Duquesne, which provides an opportunity for students and members of the community to form relationships and work together toward a common goal.”
Community sponsors for this year’s Spring Clean-Up include UPMC Health Plan, UPMC Mercy, the Hill District Consensus Group, the Pennsylvania Resources Council and Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy.
Volunteers are asked to check in on the Mellon Hall Patio at 9 a.m. After the clean-up, which is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to noon, volunteers will be treated to live music and a free lunch. Lunch will be provided by Taste of the Neighborhood for participants on the South Side and Z-Best Barbeque for those working in the Hill District.
“For people on campus who have not participated in Spring Clean-Up but are thinking about it, please join us,” said Lecci. “It truly is a lot of fun and a great way to meet people from the University and neighboring communities.”
