The Women in Science at Duquesne University (WIS@DU) is hosting Dr. Debra Rolison, a chemist with the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory and a Fellow of the American Chemical Society, for a campus lecture and student discussions.

Faculty, staff and students are invited to hear Rolison present Creating Change in Scientific Institutions Through Subversion, Revolution (Title IX) and Climate Change on Tuesday, March 14, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the Wolfe Lecture Hall of Bayer Learning Center. Lunch will be served, attendees should RSVP to WIS@duq.edu with ‘Rolison’ in the subject line.

“Recent data shows that inclusion of women, and diversified views, in science enhances the quality of the research executed,” said Dr. Allyson F. O’Donnell, assistant professor of biological sciences and a member of WIS@DU. “We thought that Dr. Rolison would be able to speak to the need for diversity in academia and possible solutions for increasing diverse representation in STEM professions. Her perspective on this topic will no doubt be informative and of interest to the Women in Science at Duquesne University.”

Additionally, WIS@DU is hosting two opportunities for students to meet with Rolison.

  • On Monday, March 13, graduate students are invited to have lunch with Rolison from 12 to 1 p.m. Room 608 of the Union.
  • On Tuesday, March 14, undergraduate students are invited to have breakfast with Rolison from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. in Room 608 of the Union.

Seating is limited for both of the student events. Please RSVP to WIS@duq.edu with ‘Student Lunch’ or ‘Student Breakfast’ in the subject line.

Members of the campus community can also attend Rolison’s seminar, Opportunities with Nanoarchitectures:  The Importance of Nothing and the Unimportance of Periodicity, on Monday, March 13, at 4 p.m. in Maurice Falk Lecture Hall of Mellon Hall. There will be a cookie reception prior to the seminar at 3:30 p.m. outside of the lecture hall.

The Rolison events are supported by Provost Dr. Timothy Austin’s office.
