The Center for Interpretive and Qualitative Research (CIQR) will examine human rights and the roles of scholar-activists when it presents Human Rights in the 21st Century: Roles and Strategies for Scholars.
Slated for Thursday, Feb. 1, this seminar will feature Sociology Professor Dr. Jackie Smith, from the University of Pittsburgh and editor of Open Access Journal of World-Systems Research. The event will be held at 4:30 p.m. in the Berger Gallery in College Hall.
During her presentation, Smith will draw upon her work on transnational global justice activism and how people in different parts of the world are responding to pressures of globalization. Questions about the roles of scholar-activists and the challenges of doing engaged research will also be addressed.
Smith has authored several books, including Social Movements and World-System Transformation, and Social Movements for Global Democracy. She also has served on the U.S. Social Forum’s National Planning Committee and is co-founder of the International Network of Scholar-Activists. Smith helps coordinate Pittsburgh’s Human Rights City Alliance and serves on the National Steering Committee of the U.S. Human Rights Cities Alliance.
CIQR develops and explores interpretive and qualitative research methods, as well as their practical implications. The center brings together a diverse group of faculty and graduate students for monthly seminars and panels, interdisciplinary and cross-listed graduate courses, lectures and workshops offered by visiting scholars and hosts scholars in residence, and conducts community action research and outreach.
This event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact CIQR coordinator Fred Evans at evansf@duq.edu.
