Sign-up is now underway for University faculty, staff and students to participate in the 25th annual Spring Clean-Up on Saturday, April 12.

The event, sponsored by Spiritan Campus Ministry in the Division of Mission and Identity, draws hundreds of volunteers from campus organizations and local communities to help clean up the South Side and Greater Hill District neighborhoods. Planned projects will include litter pick up, green space planting and graffiti removal.

The Spring Clean-Up event helps to strengthen Duquesne’s longstanding relationship with local communities. Community partners for this year’s event include UPMC Health Plan, UPMC Mercy, the Hill District Consensus Group, Clean Green Hill, Pennsylvania Resources Council and the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy.

“The Spring-Clean Up serves to get litter off the streets and create more green spaces in our neighborhoods but that is only one piece of the event,” said Luci-Jo DiMaggio, assistant director of Spiritan Campus Ministry. “Even more important is that we are out there with community residents, working side by side. It’s a very Spiritan way of doing things, going into a community not just to accomplish a task but to be with people, walk with people and build relationships with them so that we can continue to work together as agents of positive change.”

Volunteer breakfast and check-in will take place on the Mellon Hall Patio at 9 a.m. Lunch and live music will be provided to all volunteers, including a “Taste of the Neighborhood” for participants on the South Side and Z-Best Barbeque for those working in the Greater Hill District.

Organizers ask that volunteers wear closed-toe shoes and Duquesne clothing on the day of the event.

For more information or to register, contact Luci-Jo DiMaggio at 412.396.1405.
